She came into this world with a wail,
head to toes covered in you—delicate
hands, defiant chin, small feet and
a tone to pierce skin. Under a heat lamp
gives her a scare, that is until mommy
whispers, It’s okay, my little dear,
mommy and daddy are here.
When the nurse lays her on your breast,
her rosebud lips stops its mewl to root
for sustenance. A tiny bundle
to swaddle in cotton catches
leaks from her new parents’ eyes
as they stare in wonder
for their baby siren.
